Criss Angel's Four Magic Tricks
Revealed!
In This Magic of Criss
Angel Is Explained
About Criss Angel
Criss Angel is a "cutting
edge"magician whose popularity skyrocketed with the success of his
A&Etelevision show, "Criss Angel's Freakout."Angel likes to perform
edgymagic (cut and restored wrist, the magic colostomy bag, etc.)
innatural-looking settings. For instance, where David Copperfield
mightperform a light-and-dance spectacular centered around a caged duck
andthen turn the duck into a chicken, Angel is more likely to come upon
aduck wandering around in the wild, levitate it into a barbecue, and
eatit.
In addition
toperforming magic, Angel likes to thrill audiences with
death-defyingstunts. Some of these stunts include:
*Being shackled and sealed in a
barrel full of water which is then lifted to a height of 80 feet and
blown apart by a howitzer
*Lying on a bed of nails and having
a Humvee dropped on him
*Being suspended by fishhooks through his skin from a helicopter
whichthen lowers him over a lake so he can be used as human bait to
catch anenormous bass
*Levitating people against their will
*Eating David Copperfield's duck.
Angel is very private about his personal life, and rumor has it that he
is actually a short, pudgy black grandmother-of-twelve named Clarice.
1. Trash Can Teleport
Effect
On a public street, Criss Angel has himself covered by a large trashcan.
Moments later, the trash can is removed and Angel is gone. Someonein
the crowd points, and there is Angel standing on top of a
building,looking all cool.
Secret
The trash can that is used to cover Angel has a plastic garbage bag fora
liner. Studious students of magic will wonder about this -- who theheck
puts a liner in a full-size garbage can? Indeed, it is this linerthat
makes the trick work.
Once he is under the garbage can, Angel uses a flashlight and a
pocketknife to make a slit in the liner. He then gets into the space
betweenthe liner and the outside of the trashcan. The people turning
thetrashcan right-side up don't notice the extra weight because
excitementhas pumped them full of adrenaline, and the crowd doesn't
notice thatthe liner no longer goes to the bottom of the trash can be
cause, asany good street magician knows, crowds pretty much never
noticeanything.
After the can is upright again, all that remains is for Angel to slipout
of the can, run across the street, and use the staircase to get tothe
top of the building. He can do this at full speed, because when he
reappears to the crowd he will be at such a distancethat nobody will
know how seriously he is panting and sweating.
2. Levitate Between
Buildings
Effect
Criss Angel stands at the edge of a tall building and holds his armsout.
He begins to float, levitates over the edge of the building, andflies
some distance before coming to light on another building.
Secret
Angel wears big, baggy clothes for a reason. In this case, the reasonis
that his body is wrapped with inner tubes that are filled withexactly
enough helium to make his weight effectively zero. Because heis buoyant
in the atmosphere, a little push off with the feet is enoughto send
Angel flying slowly through the air to his destination.
Note: This same effect was attempted in the 1930s by a German
magicianwho made the mistakes of filling his apparatus with highly
flammablehydrogen and attempting the flight while smoking. The
resultingexplosion was horrifically spectacular.
Note: Also, you shouldn't try this yourself because you will probably
die.
3. Levitating Light Bulb
Effect
The magician shows a normal light bulb, demonstrating that it
isunfettered by wires. With a gesture from the magician, the light
bulbbegins to glow. It then floats from the magician's fingertips,
amazingspectators and bringing spots before the eyes of those staring
straightinto it without sunglasses.
Secret
Sometimes, the simplest explanation for an effect is the correct one.
This is one of those cases.
The light bulb is completely normal. A standard Tesla powerbroadcasting
station beams electricity to the bulb on stage, making itglow as if
plugged into a socket. From there, physics takes over.
As the glow of the bulb heats the air within it, the bulb becomeslighter
and begins to rise, like a hot air balloon. (All light bulbsare capable
of this, but they are usually attached to a lamp, the extraweight of
which prevents it from floating about the room.) The magicianjust needs
to catch the bulb when it turns off, to prevent it fromfalling to the
floor as it cools.
Note: This same "hot air rises" principle was used by Criss Angel
tolevitate over the 800-degree lights of the Luxor hotel in Las
Vegas.Remember than Angel used fireproofed shoes and other safety
devices toensure that he did not die, so you should not attempt to
duplicate thisfeat during a visit to Vegas.
4. Walk Through Glass
Effect
Criss Angel and spectators stand outside the front window of a
smallbusiness. Angel goes into the business after asking two spectators
tohold a newspaper spread in front of the window. Seconds later,
Angel'shand bursts through the paper, with the rest of him following
closelybehind. The window is shown to be intact-- Angel has walked
rightthrough a pane of glass!
Secret
Believe it or not, there is no glass in the shop window. Instead,
aperfectly even waterfall of pure H2O is used to simulate a
windowwithout offering any barrier. Before the trick begins, Angel
coatshimself with acylitate of silica benzodrine nitrate (a highly
flammablecarcinogenic water repellant skin irritant) and talcum powder
so thatwater will bead on his skin and roll off as if he were a duck.
Hisclothing is entirely fabricated from rubber and coated with Armor
Alsothat it, too, will not look wet.
With this setup, all Angel has to do is, hidden behind the
paper, stepthrough the "window" and into the gaze of his amazed audience.
